The first seven months of this year were the warmest since climate record-keeping began in 1895. (National Climactic Data Center)

And based on nearly every scientific projection, it’s only going to get warmer. The question is how warm?

If temperature increases are kept to 1 to 2 degrees, it is manageable. But if warming increases to 5 to 9 degrees or even more, the effects on our planet will be catastrophic. We must begin to take certain steps now.

So, each of us is confronted with a choice — a choice that will impact not only our future, but the futures of our children and grandchildren.

Do we continue with a business-as-usual attitude? Or do we make the changes needed to prevent catastrophe?

How did we reach this point?

Quite simply, we are addicted to fossil fuels.

And it is the burning of these fuels – coal, oil, gasoline and natural gas and the resultant greenhouse gas emissions – that is the primary cause of global warming.

Carbon dioxide, the most plentiful of the greenhouse gases, is produced by power plants, cars, manufacturing, and residential and commercial buildings.

And here is the key: Carbon dioxide doesn’t dissipate. It stays in the atmosphere for five decades or more – causing Earth’s temperature to rise.

That means that the carbon dioxide produced in the 1950s, 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s is still in the atmosphere today. And the carbon dioxide produced today will still be in the atmosphere in 2050 and beyond.

Many of the world’s most preeminent scientists – including those at the University of California, the Scripps Institute, and Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory – all predict serious consequences for our planet unless we make major changes in our consumption of energy and strongly move away from energy sources that produce global warming – namely carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide and methane.

They say that to stabilize the planet’s climate by the end of the century, we need a 70 percent reduction in carbon dioxide emissions below 1990 levels by 2050.

The Earth has already warmed 1 degree in the past century and we’re seeing the dramatic effects:

* The 1990s were the hottest decade on record. * Glaciers are melting; coral reefs are dying; species are disappearing. * Extreme weather patterns have evolved – heat waves, droughts, hurricanes, and floods – and they are occurring with greater frequency and greater intensity.

Global warming is also touching us closer to home:

* The Sierra snowpack is shrinking. * The scope and intensity of forest fires in the west is increasing. * And production is down at wineries and dairies as result of the recent heat wave.

Things will only get worse as temperatures rise. The question is how much will the increase be?

If temperatures increase by another 1 to 2 degrees over the next 50 years, we will see major — but manageable — shifts in the world around us:

* The Sierra-Nevada snowpack would shrink by 30 percent. * Sea levels would rise up to six inches. * Large wildfires would increase by 10 percent. * And electricity demand would increase by 3 percent. (California Climate Change Center)

These are significant changes – but it is possible to adapt to them.

But if nothing is done…if the Earth warms 5 degrees or more in the next 50 years, the face of our planet will change forever. According to scientific estimates:

* Three out of five species would become extinct. Oceans would rise. Flooding would occur. Hurricanes, tornadoes and weather would become more volatile than ever. Malaria would spread. * in California: Two-thirds of the Sierra snowpack would disappear — equal to the water supply for the 16 million people in the LA basin. * Sea levels would rise more than 2 feet, leading to 100-year floods every 10 years. * Risk of catastrophic wildfire would more than double. * Energy demands would increase 10 to 20 percent. (California Climate Change Center)

We got a mild taste of that future in July. Here in the City, temperatures spiked to 97 degrees. And it was far worse in other areas of delhi . More than 160 people died.

So, we’re at a tipping point.

Refuse to act, or act too slowly, and humans will have caused the most sudden temperature shift in the history of the planet.

But, if we act soon and decisively, global warming can be limited to 1 to 2 degrees. This, I contend, should be our goal.

Time to Act

Working together, I believe we can reduce our emissions sufficiently to stabilize the Earth’s climate, to minimize warming, and slow global temperature increases to 1-2 degrees to avoid catastrophic climate change.

Here is what I ask of you.

Be energy conscious.

Bring pressure on your utility, your government, and commit yourself and your family to reduce energy consumption.

Don’t shift the burden to the next generation.

The choice is clear.

It is time to stop talking and to begin acting.

Inspirational true life story inspired me and i tagged her as the favorite celebrities for decades. One such well known celebrity around the globe who is recognized for her courage, welfare strategies and tag line ‘I Dare’ is Kiran Bedi. She dreamt and worked for a better world and she achieved it. Read all about the inspirational icon who has always worn a smile in the battle of life.

Early Life
Kiran Bedi born on 9th June 1949 in Amritsar, as the second of the four daughters to her parents, Prakash Lal Peshawaria and Prem Lata Peshawaria. She completed her schooling and graduation in Arts from her native place itself. She earned a master’s degree the following year in Political science from Punjab University. The ardent learner with active service in the Indian Police also acquired a law degree (LLB) from Delhi University. She was also awarded a Ph.D. in 1993 in Social Sciences by the Department of Social Sciences, the Indian Institute of Technology, New Delhi.

As a child born in a well to do family, Kiran was aware of how special her life was compared to the majority of Indian children. Her parents sacrificed a great deal, so that their daughters could go to the best schools, learn sports, and be exceptional in the male dominated country.

As a teenager Kiran Bedi won Asian women’s lawn tennis champion. Recollecting her childhood she sates in one of her interviews, “I came from a sports background where I was the only girl traveling with a batch of 20 boys.” After few years she was recognized as the first woman to join the Indian Police service in 1972.

Her Marital Life
Kiran Bedi was determined to choose her own life partner at an early age, as the bitter shades of marital relationship of her elder sister always bid a nightmare to the term called marriage. Shashi her elder sister was a girl next door who dreamt of leading a normal life like any other girl. Sashi got engaged to a Canada-based Indian heart specialist while she was pursuing her Master’s degree. The marriage was a disaster as the doctor was already engaged to someone else in Canada. But Shashi could not fight for her marriage but had to succumb to the doctors interest (like bribe) and stay with him for life in an unknown land. This bitter experience increased Kiran’s determination to make her own way in her own country.

Kiran Bedi’s first serious relationship did not work for long. The basic reasons was that she was strongly career oriented, while he wanted her career to be secondary to his. The second issue was that he wanted a traditional marriage that included a dowry. The brave heart lady was not willing to be domesticated, so she decided to end the relationship. She then met Brij Bedi at the Amritsar tennis courts who shared same interests, beliefs and goals. He was nine years elder to her. They married in 1972 in the most unique marriage ceremony of the yesteryears. Neither of them believed in religious ceremonies, or an expensive marriage ritual. Therefore they went to the Shiva temple and prayed, going around the temple seven times. Then they organized a joint reception paid from their combined earnings. When Kiran and Brij Bedi learnt that their carers needed special attention both of them decided to lead a separate life by remaining soul companions. Both of them took delight in leading a life that reciprocates growth of an individual. When a far they took the delight in expressing their loneliness, unhappiness, and distance in the form of poetry. This kind of marital arrangement is unconventional in India even till this date. With both parental and marital support, Kiran strived to make a difference around her.

Kiran and Brij had a daughter, Saina, three years after Kiran started her career in the Indian Police Service (IPS). Saina is also involved in community service. She along with her husband Ruzbeh N. Bharucha, (a journalist by profession) produce short films and documentaries.

Her Career
When asked in an interview why did she choose career in Police she promptly replied, ” For me policing is not punitive. It always stood for social welfare. But tough welfare. Where I could command welfare, I could demand welfare, and I could produce welfare.”

Kiran Bedi began her career as a lecturer in Political Science (1970 -72). She left the post soon after she got selected for the Indian Police Service in the year 1972. In the police service she served in a number of different and challenging assignments that range from Traffic Commissioner of New Delhi, Deputy Inspector General of Police in insurgency prone Mizoram, Advisor to the Lieutanent Governor of Chandigarh, Director General of Narcotics Control Bureau and also on a United Nationsdeputation.

Kiran Bedi did not fear anybody. For her the law was the same for all, be it the President of India or any commoner. It is said that she once towed the Prime Minister Indira Gandhi car for parking violation who was on tour of United States.

Kiran Bedi also influenced other areas like control of narcotics, traffic management and VIP security. During her transfer to Tihar Jail as the Inspector General of Prison she worked relentlessly to give jailed convicts a new lease of life through meditation and spiritualism. She initiated a number of measures in prison management some of them are yoga, vipassana meditation, and redressing of complaints by prisoners. Her humane and fearless approach has contributed greatly to innumerable innovative policing and prison reforms.

Kiran Bedi has set up two major voluntary organizations called Navjyoti and India Vision Foundation
with the objectives of improving the condition of the drug addicts and the downtrodden. Her organization has been applauded from far and wide. It was also awarded ‘Serge Soitiroff Memorial Award’ for drug abuse prevention by the United Nations. She has recently been appointed as Director General of India’s Bureau of Police Research and Development. Earlier, she was Police Advisor in the United Nations peacekeeping department, and has also been honored with the UN medal for outstanding service.

After reading the vision 2020 of DR APJ Abdul Kalam i was inspired by his view for development of the india. The growth experience of the indian economies during the past two decades has significantly changed the perceptions on development theory and practice the world over. The considerable body of literature that has come up in just two years on the so-called “Indian meltdown” is rivaled only by that which earlier sought to analyse the “East Asian miracle”. There is no doubt that our knowledge of development theory and practice is richer by these contributions. It is, however, ironic that our gain in knowledge has been at the cost of immense human suffering that has been experienced by the people of our countries. It would be a travesty if this suffering is left to be in vain, and we do not draw the lessons which would prevent its recurrence in any part of the world.

The issues arising from the East Asian crisis appears to fall into two broad categories : (a) identifying the causes of the crisis and the transmission mechanism; and (b) evaluating the nature and appropriateness of the response to the crisis, both national and international. These are certainly important issues in that they lay the groundwork for devising systems and structures which could prevent recurrence. However, although I am no expert in these matters, it appears to me that there is a certain incompleteness in the analyses that have come to my notice.

In the first instance, it appears to me that there has been an excessive focus on the role and structure of the financial sector as the principal causal factors in the crisis and in the transmission mechanism. Unbridled flow of short-term capital and “crony capitalism” appear to have been identified as the two main culprits. While this diagnosis may be correct, I am not certain that there are too many lessons to be learnt by us in this regard. As far as short-term capital flows are concerned, the dangers were brought starkly home to us during the crisis that we faced in India during 1990-91. It may be recalled that the Gulf War triggered off an outflow of short term debt from India in late 1990 and early 1991 which precipitated a serious balance of payment crisis. At that time the only feasible response was a severe compression of imports through administrative measures. The resulting recession was extremely painful, and we have learnt our lesson well. Today there are strong controls on short term debt and certain limitations on the inflow of foreign portfolio investments. The experience has also raised doubts in our mind regarding the desirability of moving to capital account convertibility at our present stage of development and preparedness. Indeed, it can be postulated that if other countries had learnt from our experience, the East-Asian crisis may not have been as severe.

As far as “crony capitalism” is concerned, it is extremely difficult to determine where selective promotion of economic activities and sectors ends and where crony capitalism begins. Although orthodox economics suggests that the selection of sectors of focus should be left to the market, the East Asian miracle , including that of Japan, appears to suggest otherwise. The adverse impact of “crony capitalism” lies not so much in the selectivity that is involved, but in the non-transparency that gets introduced in the operation of the financial system. In any case, our attention had been drawn to the need for greater transparency and better supervision of the financial sector well before the East Asian crisis came into existence. The growing non-performing assets of our commercial banks and financial institutions were the primary factor in precipitating our financial sector reforms.

While financial sector issues are certainly of importance and relevance, there appears to be almost complete neglect of the issues relating to the “real” economy. A question that has been nagging my mind since the collapse of the East Asian economies is whether or not these economies grew faster than could be sustained. In other words, I have been wondering whether the high growth strategy of these economies contained the seeds of its own destruction. It appears to me that any high growth strategy would need to be predicated on rapid growth of demand. If excessive reliance were to be placed on domestic demand, it is very likely that the country would run high current account deficits, which would sooner or later become non-sustainable.

In contrast to the Latin American story, the East Asian growth strategy was based on high rates of domestic saving, with the principal source of demand growth being exports. However, it appears to me that maintaining growth rates of exports significantly above the growth rate of world trade may sooner or later become difficult. After all, while other countries may tolerate erosion in their market shares for some length of time, there is bound to be some reaction beyond a point. There is after all a certain element of “beggar-my-neighbour” behaviour inherent in a high export growth strategy, and companies and countries which are adversely affected will eventually take step to forestall further erosion. The resultant slow down in export growth is bound to have a backlash effect on the capacities that have been created on the assumption of continued acceleration of exports. At this point it may not be possible to reorient the production pattern to cater to domestic demand, and recessionary conditions may set in. This seems to be at the root of the East-Asian crisis.

One possible implication that arises from this way of looking at things is that there may be a maximum growth target which can be sustained on the strength of domestic savings, a reasonable current account deficit and a rate of growth of exports somewhat above the growth rate of world trade. The question, however, is what happens if this rate of growth is insufficient to meet the pressing requirements of the economy, particularly in terms of employment generation. This is the context in which we find ourselves. The projections made for the Ninth Five Year Plan suggest that the growth rate of labour force will be around 2.5 per cent per annum for the next decade and more. At the present elasticities of employment creation, the economy will need to grow at over 7 per cent per annum to absorb the emerging labour force. Acceleration of growth is therefore a must for us and we need to develop a suitable strategy. There must surely be a middle path, which would blend a little bit of the two polar strategies, and which can be sustained with a reasonable degree of confidence.

FORCE : “an energy field created by all living things that surrounds us, penetrates us, binds the galaxy together.”

i am inspired by the movie STARWARS because i was too much addicted to the concept the “FORCE” . Everything in this world is binded by the force . For example if u take the case of the smallest particle the ATOM . You can find the electrons are binded towards the nucleus by a force .The smallest particle have a binding force then the largest particle made of it may contain the integral multiple of this force .The film STARWARS actually deals with this force and its nature . The force is of two kinds the good force and the bad force . The film STARWARS is actually a fight between the good an bad sides of the FORCE . In this film we can find the bad side of force is stronger but we tend to like the good side . so this film generates a view that the good side should win and will win even though th bad side is strong . In STARWARS the central characters are th JEDI AND SITH .JEDI a the warriors of good side of force while the siths are bad side of force . This movie generates a optimistic view about our outlook towards life . I conclude that thier is good and bad in us but our bad side is strong always tends to control us then always try to see our good side and allow it to dominate.

About STARWARS

Star Wars is an epic space opera franchise initially conceived byGeoge Lucas. The first film in the franchise was simply titled STARWARS, but later had the subtitle Episode IV: A New Hope added to distinguish it from its sequels and prequels. It was originally released on May 25, 1977 by 20th Century Fox and became a worldwide pop culture phenomenon, spawning two immediate sequels released in three-year intervals.

As of 2008, the overall box office revenue generated by the six Star Wars films has totalled approximately $4.3 billion, making it the third-highest grossing film series, behind only the James Bond and Harry Potter films.

The Star Wars franchise has spawned other media including books, television series, video games, and comic books. These supplements to the film trilogies comprise the Star Wars Expanded Universe, and have resulted in significant development of the series’ fictional universe.

The events depicted in Star Wars media take place in a fictional galaxy. Many species of alien creatures (often humanoid) are depicted. Robotic droids are also commonplace and are generally built to serve their owners. Space travel is common, and many planets in the galaxy are members of a Galactic Republic, later reorganized as the Galactic Empire.

One of the prominent elements of Star Wars is the “Force“, which is an omnipresent form of energy which can be harnessed by those with that ability. It is described in the first produced film as “an energy field created by all living things [that] surrounds us, penetrates us, [and] binds the galaxy together.” The Force allows users to perform a variety of supernatural feats (such as telekinesis, clairvoyance, precognition, and mind control) and also can amplify certain physical traits, such as speed and reflexes; these abilities can vary from user to user and can be improved through training. While the Force can be used for good, it has a dark side that, when pursued, imbues users with hatred, aggression, and malevolence. The six films feature the Jedi, who use the Force for good, and the Sith, who use the dark side for evil in an attempt to take over the galaxy.

this facts are taken from a seminar conducted on ill effects of smoking in Amrita Ayurveda Medical College on world anti tobbaco day on june 5th by the medical students of same college. Students made exclusive research on this topics being a part of that team i am honoured to put this in front of u

* Smoking is an addiction. Tobacco smoke contains nicotine, a drug that is addictive and can make it very hard, but not impossible, to quit.

* More than 400,000 deaths in the U.S. each year are from smoking-related illnesses. Smoking greatly increases your risks for lung cancer and many other cancers.

Hurting Others

* Smoking harms not just the smoker, but also family members, coworkers and others who breathe the smoker’s cigarette smoke, called secondhand smoke.

* Among infants to 18 months of age, secondhand smoke is associated with as many as 300,000 cases of bronchitis and pneumonia each year.

* Secondhand smoke from a parent’s cigarette increases a child’s chances for middle ear problems, causes coughing and wheezing, and worsens asthma conditions.

* If both parents smoke, a teenager is more than twice as likely to smoke than a young person whose parents are both non-smokers. In households where only one parent smokes, young people are also more likely to start smoking.

* Pregnant women who smoke are more likely to deliver babies whose weights are too low for the babies’ good health. If all women quit smoking during pregnancy, about 4,000 new babies would not die each year.

Why Quit?

* Quitting smoking makes a difference right away – you can taste and smell food better. Your breath smells better. Your cough goes away. This happens for men and women of all ages, even those who are older. It happens for healthy people as well as those who already have a disease or condition caused by smoking.

* Quitting smoking cuts the risk of lung cancer, many other cancers, heart disease, stroke, other lung diseases, and other respiratory illnesses.

* Ex-smokers have better health than current smokers. Ex-smokers have fewer days of illness, fewer health complaints, and less bronchitis and pneumonia than current smokers.

* Quitting smoking saves money. A pack-a-day smoker, who pays $2 per pack can, expect to save more than $700 per year. It appears that the price of cigarettes will continue to rise in coming years, as will the financial rewards of quitting.

Getting Ready to Quit

* Set a date for quitting. If possible, have a friend quit smoking with you.

* Notice when and why you smoke. Try to find the things in your daily life that you often do while smoking (such as drinking your morning cup of coffee or driving a car).

* Change your smoking routines: Keep your cigarettes in a different place. Smoke with your other hand. Don’t do anything else when smoking. Think about how you feel when you smoke.

* Smoke only in certain places, such as outdoors.

* When you want a cigarette, wait a few minutes. Try to think of something to do instead of smoking; you might chew gum or drink a glass of water.

* Buy one pack of cigarettes at a time. Switch to a brand of cigarettes you don’t like.

On the Day You Quit

* Get rid of all your cigarettes. Put away your ashtrays.

* Change your morning routine. When you eat breakfast, don’t sit in the same place at the kitchen table. Stay busy.

* When you get the urge to smoke, do something else instead. Carry other things to put in your mouth, such as gum, hard candy, or a toothpick.

* Reward yourself at the end of the day for not smoking. See a movie or go out and enjoy your favorite meal.

Staying Quit

* Don’t worry if you are sleepier or more short-tempered than usual; these feelings will pass.

* Try to exercisep;take walks or ride a bike.

* Consider the positive things about quitting, such as how much you like yourself as a non-smoker, health benefits for you and your family, and the example you set for others around you. A positive attitude will help you through the tough times.

* When you feel tense, try to keep busy, think about ways to solve the problem, tell yourself that smoking won’t make it any better, and go do something else.

* Eat regular meals. Feeling hungry is sometimes mistaken for the desire to smoke.

* Start a money jar with the money you save by not buying cigarettes.

* Let others know that you have quit smokingp;most people will support you. Many of your smoking friends may want to know how you quit. It’s good to talk to others about your quitting.

* If you slip and smoke, don’t be discouraged. Many former smokers tried to stop several times before they finally succeeded. Quit again.

If you need more help, see your doctor.
He or she may prescribe nicotine gum or a nicotine patch to help you break your addiction to cigarettes.

on seeing the video i thought about the people in the world who are suffering from poverty and hunger that thier view about life. hunger and poverty are the two sides of a same coin. why the people are wasting food ? the answer is very simple that they dont know the feeling of a person who are starving for days without food . when he or she faces such a situation they may repent for negligent use of food

Hunger and poverty are powerful but familiar terms. Everyone knows what they mean, yet, they
evoke different images for everyone. Even major international organizations mandated to
alleviate hunger and poverty use a variety of interpretations.
The United Nations, perhaps the most prominent international institution dealing with hunger
and poverty, divides poverty into two general classifications: income poverty and human
poverty.1 Although there are multiple ways to define poverty, most fall into one of these two
broad categories.
The Hunger Project has always taken a holistic approach to hunger. Although hunger can and is
often described in terms of its medical implications, hunger can also be viewed as representative
of all the tragic and horrific circumstances that cause it. Poverty causes hunger. Resignation
causes hunger. Gender discrimination causes hunger. The Hunger Project board member Mohini
Giri said, “To me, hunger is rape, molestation, dowry, illiteracy, female feticide, female
infanticide, and above all, it is patriarchy. That is what hunger is all about to me.” The Hunger
Project treats hunger as a symptom of the problem of poverty, dependence, and inequality.
Embedded in all of our work is the pursuit to end not only persistent hunger for nutrition, but
also the hunger for free expression, for self-reliance, for dignity, and for a fulfilled life.
Income Poverty
Income poverty is an understanding of poverty that is solely based on levels of monetary income.
It is used by both the World Bank and the UN. According to the World Bank, people living on
less than US$1 per day are living in extreme poverty, and people who earn less than US$2 a day
are in moderate poverty.2
Worldwide, approximately one billion people live on less than US$1 a day. 3 About 2.6 billion
live on less than US$2 a day. This amounts to 40% of the world’s population.4 South Asia is the
region with the greatest concentration of extreme poverty. In India, the world’s second most
populous nation, 34% live on less than US$1 a day and 80% live on less than US$2 a day.5 In
Sub-Saharan Africa, 41% of the population lives on less than US$1 a day. 6
Income poverty is also used to determine a poverty threshold or poverty line. This is the
boundary between poverty and non-poverty as determined by governments. It is based on the
cost of subsistence needs in a given country7 so, while US$1 a day is the international poverty
line, for countries where the cost of living is higher, the poverty line is higher. In the United
States, for example, the poverty line is at about US$28 a day.8
Human Poverty
Whereas income poverty is based on only one indicator, human poverty encompasses the
multiplicity of dimensions associated with poverty. It includes deprivation on a material level,
e.g. lack of proper diet, clothing, shelter, and work. It also includes social deprivation, such as
denial of employment, participation in social institutions, and education. 9 The UN utilizes the
human poverty framework as well as income poverty. The UN’s Economic and Social Council
has described human poverty as:
“… a denial of choices and opportunities, a violation of human dignity. It means lack of basic
capacity to participate effectively in society. It means not having enough to feed and clothe a

family, not having a school or clinic to go to, not having the land on which to grow one’s food or
a job to earn one’s living, not having access to credit. It means insecurity, powerlessness and
exclusion of individuals, households and communities. It means susceptibility to violence, and it
often implies living on marginal or fragile environments, without access to clean water or
sanitation”10
Hunger
From the most comprehensive perspective, hunger describes the feeling of discomfort that is the
body’s signal that it is in need of more food. All people experience this feeling at times but, for
most people, particularly in the developed world, this phenomenon is a fleeting event that is
alleviated once the next meal is taken, causing no deep or permanent damage.11 When hunger or
lack of food persists, however, the consequences can be devastating.
Undernourishment
According to the FAO, undernourishment is the measure of food deprivation. An individual is
considered undernourished if he or she doesn’t receive enough dietary energy to maintain a
healthy and active life.12
854 million people are undernourished worldwide; 820 million in developing countries.13 In Sub-
Saharan Africa, 32% of the population is undernourished. Ethiopia has a population in which
46% of people are undernourished. Although sub-Saharan Africa accounts for only 13% of the
population in the developing world, it accounts for 25% of its undernourished.
The next highest regional concentration of undernourishment is South Asia, where 22% of the
population is undernourished. In Bangladesh, 30% are undernourished and India has a rate of
20%. The absolute number of undernourished people is highest in India: India has 212 million
undernourished people, the largest in the world.
In Latin America, 10% of the population is undernourished. In Peru, the rate is 12% and in
Bolivia, the rate is 23%.14
Malnutrition
Malnutrition is caused by more that just a lack of dietary energy. It can occur if the quality or
variety of food is insufficient even if there is plenty in terms of quantity. Infections, disease, and
unsafe water and sanitation can also cause malnutrition.15
There are several ways in which malnutrition is measured. Wasting and underweight are
indicators based on comparisons to healthy weight averages for specific ages.16 Stunting is an
indicator of chronic malnutrition and is based upon height-for-age.17 Birthweight is strongly
related to the birth mother’s health and impacts a baby’s long and short term chances for
survival, its growth, and its long-term health and psychosocial development.18
Malnutrition is a process with consequences that may extend not only into later life, but also into
future generations. A malnourished mother is more likely to give birth to an underweight or
unhealthy child. Malnourishment often begins in utero and can persist over a lifetime. In
children, malnutrition is synonymous with growth failure. Malnourished children are shorter and

lighter than they should be. A cycle of malnutrition can consume and endanger generations of
healthy lives. 19
The degree of malnutrition in the developing world is severe. In the least developed countries,
35% of children of ages 0-5 years are either moderately or severely underweight. In Sub-Saharan
Africa, 38% of children in this age group are moderately or severely stunted. In South Asia, this
rate is 47%. The global rate for moderate or severe wasting is 11%, in comparison to 18% in
South Asia. Additionally, 29% of infants are born underweight in South Asia. 20
The relationship between hunger and poverty
Not every poor person is hungry, but almost all hungry people are poor. Millions live with
hunger and malnourishment because they simply cannot afford to buy enough food, cannot
afford nutritious foods, or cannot afford the farming supplies they need to grow enough good
food of their own.21 Hunger can be viewed as a dimension of extreme poverty. It is often called
the most severe and critical manifestation of poverty.
The United Nation’s Millennium Development Goals conflate hunger and poverty in its first goal
to “eradicate extreme poverty and hunger.” The indicators used for this goal measure income
poverty, undernourishment, and malnutrition, but also the employment-to-population ratio and
other employment indicators, the growth rate of the economy, and the poverty gap ratio22
(measure of the depth of poverty below the poverty line).
Historical trends suggest that poverty declines more quickly than undernourishment. 23 This
suggests that poverty reduction usually first benefits those who are not so poor as to be hungry.

This is a very innovative idea.
I think that boy is a roll model to all indians . we must do our duties sincerly inorder to lead india to a position which no country has ever attained . For fifty years we have been a developing nation. It is time we see ourselves as a developed nation. We are among top 5 nations of the world in terms of GDP. We have 10 percent growth rate in most areas. Our poverty levels are falling. Our achievements are being globally recognized today. Yet we lack the self-confidence to see ourselves as a developed nation, self-reliant and self-assured. Isn’t this incorrect?

my vision is that India must stand up to the world. Because I believe that unless India stands up to the world, no one will respect us. Only strength respects strength. We must be strong not only as a military power but also as an economic power. Both must go hand-in-hand.

Why is the media here so negative? Why are we in India so embarrassed to recognize our own strengths, our achievements? We are such a great nation. We have so many amazing success stories but we refuse to acknowledge them. Why? We are the first in milk production. We are number one in Remote sensing satellites. We are the second largest producer of wheat. We are the second largest producer of rice. Look at Dr. Sudarshan, he has transferred the tribal village into a self-sustaining, self-driving unit. There are millions of such achievements but our media is only obsessed in the bad news and failures and disasters.

once and I was reading a foriegn newspaper. It was the day after a lot of attacks and bombardments and deaths had taken place. The terrorists had struck. But the front page of the newspaper had the picture of a Jewish gentleman who in five years had transformed his desert land into an orchid and a granary. It was this inspiring picture that everyone woke up to. The gory details of killings, bombardments, deaths, were inside in the newspaper, buried among other news. In India we only read about death, sickness, terrorism, crime. Why are we so NEGATIVE? Another question: Why are we, as a nation so obsessed with foreign things? We want foreign TVs, we want foreign shirts. We want foreign technology. Why this obsession with everything imported. Do we not realize that self-respect comes with self-reliance?

a 14 year old girl asked me about my proffesion. I asked her what her goal in life is: She replied: I want to live in a developed India. For her, you and I will have to build this developed India. You must proclaim. India is not an under-developed nation; it is a highly developed nation.

Allow me to come back with vengeance. Got 10 minutes for your country?

YOU say that our government is inefficient. YOU say that our laws are too old. YOU say that the municipality does not pick up the garbage. YOU say that the phones don’t work, the railways are a joke, the airline is the worst in the world, mails never reach their destination. YOU say that our country has been fed to the dogs and is the absolute pits. YOU say, say and say.

What do YOU do about it? Take a person on his way to England. Give him a name – YOURS. Give him a face – YOURS. YOU walk out of the airport and you are at your International best. In England you don’t throw cigarette butts on the roads or eat in the stores. YOU are as proud of their Underground Links as they are. You pay 5 pounds to drive through Orchard Road (equivalent of Mahim Causeway or Pedder Road) between 5 PM and 8 PM.

YOU comeback to the parking lot to punch your parking ticket if you have over stayed in a restaurant or a shopping mall irrespective of your status identity. In England you don’t say anything, DO YOU? YOU wouldn’t dare to eat in public during Ramadan, in Dubai. YOU would not dare to go out without your head covered in Jeddah. YOU would not dare to buy an employee of the telephone exchange in London at 10 pounds (Rs. 650) a month to, “see to it that my STD and ISD calls are billed to someone else.” YOU would not dare to speed beyond 55 mph (88 kph) in Washington and then tell the traffic cop, “Jaanta hai sala main kaun hoon (Do you know who I am?). I am so and so’s son. Take your two bucks and get lost.” YOU wouldn’t chuck an empty coconut shell anywhere other than the garbage pail on the beaches in Australia and New Zealand. Why don’t YOU spit Paan on the streets of Tokyo? Why don’t YOU use examination jockeys or buy fake certificates in Boston? We are still talking of the same YOU. YOU who can respect and conform to a foreign system in other countries but cannot in your own. You who will throw papers and cigarettes on the road the moment you touch Indian ground. If you can be an involved and appreciative citizen in an alien country why cannot you be the same here in India. Once in an interview, the famous Ex-municipal commissioner of Bombay Mr.Rajpal had a point to make. “Rich people’s dogs are walked on the streets to leave their affluent droppings all over the place,” he said. “And then the same people turn around to criticize and blame the authorities for inefficiency and dirty pavements. What do they expect the officers to do? Go down with a broom every time their dog feels the pressure in his bowels? In America every dog owner has to clean up after his pet has done the job. Same in Japan. Will the Indian citizen do that here?” He’s right. We go to the polls to choose a government and after that forfeit all responsibility. We sit back wanting to be pampered and expect the government to do everything for us whilst our contribution is totally negative. We expect the government to clean up but we are not going to stop chucking garbage all over the place nor are we going to stop to pick a up a stray piece of paper and throw it in the bin. We expect the railways to provide clean bathrooms but we are not going to learn the proper use of bathrooms. We want Indian Airlines and Air India to provide the best of food and toiletries but we are not going to stop pilfering at the least opportunity. This applies even to the staff who is known not to pass on the service to the public. When it comes to burning social issues like those related to women, dowry, girl child and others, we make loud drawing room protestations and continue to do the reverse at home. Our excuse? “It’s the whole system which has to change, how will it matter if I alone forego my sons’ rights to a dowry.” So who’s going to change the system? What does a system consist of? Very conveniently for us it consists of our neighbors, other households, other cities, other communities and the government. But definitely not me and YOU. When it comes to us actually making a positive contribution to the system we lock ourselves along with our families into a safe cocoon and look into the distance at countries far away and wait for a Mr. Clean to come along & work miracles for us with a majestic sweep of his hand. Or we leave the country and run away. Like lazy cowards hounded by our fears we run to America to bask in their glory and praise their system. When New York becomes insecure we run to England. When England experiences unemployment, we take the next flight out to the Gulf. When the Gulf is war struck, we demand to be rescued and brought home by the Indian government. Everybody is out to abuse and rape the country. Nobody thinks of feeding the system. Our conscience is mortgaged to money.

“ASK WHAT WE CAN DO FOR INDIA AND DO WHAT HAS TO BE DONE TO MAKE INDIA WHAT AMERICA AND OTHER WESTERN COUNTRIES ARE TODAY”k
